Texas Redeemed by: Isla Bennet
A Night Sky Novel
Pages: 393

~Synopsis~

Ranch owner Valerie Jordan learned the hard way that people carve out their own destiny. She knows firsthand what can come of one night of unchecked attraction and lost inhibitions. And she also knows there’s only one way to handle guarded missionary doctor Peyton Turner: with caution. Thirteen years ago, they went from being friends to lovers to strangers. To save himself and outrun his past, Peyton disappeared. Now the prodigal son of Night Sky, Texas, is home—though he has no intention of staying. But once the revelation that he and Valerie share a troubled teenage daughter sends him on a hunt for answers, there’s no avoiding one another…no ignoring the undeniable desire that draws them together.

Texas Redeemed is a passionately written and emotionally gripping story of lust and risk, love and forgiveness, of confronting the damaging secrets of the past for a chance at redemption.

4.0 Star Review – Texas Redeemed

I recommend this book.

Valerie is a single mother. Raising her daughter, Lucy on her own as Peyton, the father left after a one night stand and has yet to return. She has dealt with a lot of pain and sorrow of the last 13 years. She was disowned by her uncle so she ended up with no family and friends. Peyton was her best friend and after heated words he disappeared.

Peyton is back in town after 13 years. He is a doctor and was called home by his grandfather. When he gets back he is shocked that his former best friend is raising his daughter by herself. He is the long lost town bad boy. He left town and had no idea that he left Val pregnant. She is not mad at him as it was a one night stand and since he didn’t know about her being pregnant how can she be mad? When he comes back to town she tells him he is the father right away.

Val feels she needs to protect Lucy from her father. He left before how much damage with that do to her and Lucy if he leaves again?

Will the love Peyton has for Val ever be returned? Is Peyton willing to fight for Val? Does Val still love Peyton? Will she risk her heart and Lucy’s too?

This was a good read. You get a few side stories in this book. The author fills in the background of the characters and you never feel wanting for information. It was interesting as usually when a woman in the book has a child and the man leaves she tends to hide the fact the baby was his. In this book that is not the case and I think it made it better. The romance side was a little light. The book is more life story than Romantic story.  Look forward to the next book from this author.

About Isla:

Isla Bennet’s first encounter with a smoldering hero was on the junior high school bus—between the pages of a novel. Books have been her constant through growing up in the Midwest, partaking in some wicked travels, and working as a bookseller and nanny while earning two college degrees. She’s studied everything from English to sociology to art, and has figured out that she loves meeting people—particularly the ones she makes up. These days she indulges in her weakness for carpentry and all things retro, and dives into a new love story every day as a writer, freelance editor and RWA member—all while pursuing her wish to become a horseback-riding, volleyball-playing, French-speaking seasoned traveler.

Valerie could match his stubbornness measure for measure. “I’m not leaving then.”

He swaggered into the bathroom, then came the sounds of a toilet flushing and water running. He appeared in the doorway with a toothbrush sticking out of his mouth. “Still here?”

“I said I’m not leaving.” She emphasized her point by sitting at the foot of the bed.

Peyton said nothing more as he brushed and rinsed, then stalked into the bedroom to grab a pair of crumpled jeans from the floor and yank them on. “You look good in my bed, Val.”

“Seriously, that’s not why I’m here.” She walked to the opposite side of the room. “So what’s with the scar? Did you miss the patient when you were operating?”

The look he gave her was grim. “I was mugged and stabbed while I was on a mission. It happened a long time ago and as you can see, I’m fine. Luckily, all my necessary parts function.”

She mentally cringed when she met his eyes at the words necessary parts. “I don’t believe in luck.”

He ventured closer. “What do you believe?”

“That you have some ridiculous death wish.”

            “I’m a doctor, not a stuntman.”

Frustrated, she shoved his shoulder. “Quit brushing off what I say. You’re a doctor who works in the most dangerous places. You’re Anthony Turner’s boy, the rebel—the guy who rode around on a motorcycle at crazy speeds and got into trouble left and right. You never give a damn what happens to you, and you never consider the people who might care.”

“You actually care, Valerie?” His eyes were shuttered, the words a low rumble.

            “Force of habit.”

            “Why’s that?”

“We—because we’re friends.” At his harsh look, she continued, “Isn’t that what you want? Us to be buddies again?”

“You want to be friends with the guy who hauled ass out of this town thirteen years ago. That’s not me. I’m different, Valerie. I’m not that man, and too much has gone down for me to want to be. And if you don’t realize that, you’re making a mistake.” He brought his lips toward hers, almost touching her. “Get to know me.”

It might as well have been an erotic proposition. Instantly her body reacted—a warm wave passed over her skin, her mouth watered, her thigh muscles clenched. “Peyton …”

“I want to learn you.” This time he did touch her, tracing the scar next to her eye with the tip of his finger before molding both hands to her buttocks and urging her forward.

Instantly she felt his heat … and the need to have his hands right where they were, but with her skirt out of the way. Something in the way he squeezed her flesh and parted her legs with one of his told her he was more than ready to fulfill that need.

TEXT by Cambria Hebert

Both of us pulled out a pistol at the same time. I trained mine on his chest. He trained his on Honor.

“Drop the gun,” I demanded.

“I’ll shoot her before you even pull the trigger,” he said around a sick smile.

“Run,” I told Honor.

When I didn’t hear the scuffle of rushing feet, I yelled, “Run!”

I heard her then, retreating away from us.

Lex pulled the trigger. The sound of a bullet discharging from his weapon filled the air around us. Then he swung the gun at me and squeezed off a shot. I dove to the side and shot off a bullet of my own.

He went down at the same time I did. His bullet missed me, but I prayed to God mine hit him. He didn’t move, and I hoped that meant he was injured.

I heard Honor yell my name, and I pushed off the ground and ran toward her yell. The chances of her being shot were high. If she was injured, I would need to get her out of here stat.

I saw the flash of her white shirt just ahead, and I dropped to my knees beside her.

“Are you hit?”

“Shot?” she asked, her breath coming in short spurts.

“Yes. Are you shot?”

“No.”

“Good. Let’s go.”

I pulled her up and wrapped an arm around her waist. I started leading her away from Lex. We would have to take the long way around.

We made it about three steps.

Then she shocked the shit out of me by yanking the gun out of my hand and rushing away—back toward Lex.

“Honor!” I yelled, thinking this chick must be out of her mind.

I ran behind her and she tore through the woods, skidding to a stop beside the manmade hole that was dug into the ground.

“Where is he!” she demanded, holding the gun out in front of her like she meant business.

My eyes went to the spot where he fell.

It was empty.

“Come on you sick bastard!” she challenged. “Not so tough when the playing field is even!”

She stole my gun and ran back to where she was being held captive with the intention of shooting her captor?

She was one crazy bitch.

It was awesome.

Nothing around us moved and as awesome as her kickass attitude was, it was also kind of stupid. He had a gun. He could be lining up a shot right that minute.

My gut told me he ran off, but I wasn’t going to take any chances.

I approached Honor like a cowboy approaching a nervous filly. “Hey,” I said gently. “It’s okay now. He ran off.”

She still stood rigidly, holding the gun out in front of her like she would shoot anything that freaking dared to breathe.

“Honor,” I said, stopping at her side. “You’re safe now.” Slowly, I reached out and wrapped my hand over the gun, pulling her arm down and gently taking the pistol from her grasp.

I wrapped my hand around the back of her neck. Her skin was ice cold to the touch. The warmth of my palm seemed to break through whatever mental state she was in and she turned her head, her eyes searching for mine in the dark.

“You came,” she whispered like she never really thought I would.

Something inside me cracked at her tiny, whispered words. “Of course I came.”

She folded herself against my chest, pressing her face into my jacket and letting out a deep exhale. My arm left her neck and wound around her, clutching her against me, supporting her weight, and noting how small she felt in my arms.

She might be tiny, but she was a survivor.

“You did good, sweetheart,” I murmured. “You did real good.”

I felt a shudder move through her and I wanted to gather her even closer. I was tempted to sit down right there on the ground and pull her into my lap and hunch myself around her, to shelter her with my body.

But I couldn’t.

We had to get out of here.

Excerpt:

The bartender came over with another Long Island for me. Jason handed him a crisp bill from in his wallet. I took a sip and watched as he lifted his ass up and tucked the wallet back into his back pocket.

“Don’t worry about it,” I said, forcing my eyes away from the muscles I could see shifting and flexing in his forearm while he played with the cap from his beer. “I was a little embarrassed, but only because what you said is true. I’m fine now.”

I wanted to smack myself. Why the hell did I just flat-out admit that to him? What I’d said before had been enough; there was no reason for me to add to it. Heat crept along my neck. I’d look like I was having an allergic reaction in a matter of seconds. Great.

“Maybe this will lift your embarrassment some: it’s been a while for me, too,” he said.

This new knowledge he’d openly offered floored me. His eyes locked with mine as he brought his beer to his perfect lips for a swig. I watched as his Adam’s apple bobbed from the action.

“Why?” The question formed in my head, but I had no intentions of actually saying it aloud, and most definitely not in such a dumbfounded tone. Rich laughter rumbled through his chest and his head tipped back in the process. A grin twisted at my lips, one I couldn’t suppress no matter how hard I tried. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have asked. It’s not my place.” I forced my eyes to look anywhere except at him as I shook my head.

“No, it’s okay,” he said, containing himself. “I just can’t get over how shocked you seem by my confession.”

I took a sip of my drink. “You just don’t seem like the type to have any dry spells. If I remember correctly, you didn’t have that problem in high school either, and I can’t imagine it forming in college of all places.”

Hadn’t meant to say that one aloud either. What the hell was in this drink, a loose lips amplifier?

“People change,” he said. “You did.”

“How so?”

“You’ve gotten more beautiful, for starters.”

His words made my stomach flutter and my heart pound. That was most definitely a line…but I liked it. Jason straightened his back and downed the rest of his beer. Banging the empty bottle against the bar as he set it back down, he stood and held out a hand to me.
