[REVIEW] Good Girl by Susan Wright

Good Girl

by Susan Wright

Back of the book

Kalico Jones has just moved to New York City and is desperate to keep her PR job. But during an important meeting, Hunter Munro, the hot sculptor hired by her company, whispers, “Good girl!” to Kali when she picks up his pen. His mixture of charm and dominance sets off a firestorm of emotions inside of her, as she feels both outraged and aroused.

Hunter is a player in the city’s fetish scene so he’s used to women throwing themselves at him, but he prefers the pursuit—and Kali gives him a run he can’t resist! Kali keeps on surprising him as he teases her under the nose of their over-bearing boss. But he takes his game too far when Kali runs into trouble on the subway with a gang of bullies.
Hunter rushes to help her, and he ends up falling in far deeper than he expected as they explore the hidden romance in dominance and submission. But Kali doesn’t know the secret he’s been hiding…

Kali needs to find out—is it just the chase he loves, or can Hunter really love her? After all, how can a vanilla girl like her satisfy his darkest desires?

*This is a New Adult Contemporary Romance with adult themes, language, and sexual content.*

My Review:

4.5 Star Review – Good Girl

I recommend this book.

I enjoyed this book by Susan.  This book includes passion, laughs, heartache, and kinky sexual scenes.

Kalico Jones is working for a PR firm in New York.  She is working hard to keep her job and support herself while not depending on a man.

Hunter is a artist who is bidding on a job at her PR firm.  He is sexy and funny.

During a meeting at work she meets Hunter who whispers something to her and she is angry and turned on at the same time.  After the meeting she must go to his studio with her boss.  If her boss finds out she is attracted to Hunter her boss could make her life difficult.  When he whispers to her again she is really pissed off.  Hunter apologies to her about the two slip ups and asks her out.

Hunter introduces Kali to the world of kink.  She is embarrassed by the scenes that are played out in front of everyone and the half naked people walking around.  She likes Hunter but will he give up the kink for her?  Does she want him to as she likes the things they do in private just not in front of the other people.

Hunter has had other woman under his control and some at the same time but will he just be with her or want to still be with the others?

When Hunter gives her a collar what does it mean?  The beginning of the end of their relationship or did they ever have one to begin with?  She does not understand all the rules of kink and is frustrated by not knowing anything.  She is jealous of the others that came before her and he is still friends with.

Is Hunter worth fighting for or not?  Is she ready to try all the different kinds of kink she knows he likes in order to keep him?

Will Hunter be satisfied with just Kali and no others?  What exactly does he want from Kali a kink partner or a life partner that also likes a little kink?

All in all a good read.  You could feel the frustration and the passion between Hunter and Kali the entire story.  Susan also brings the heartbreak and pain of the story out in the open for the reader and makes you understand about the characters even more.  The more you learn about their past the more you understand what makes them the people (or characters) they are now.  Look forward to Susan’s next romance book.

Excerpt
I turn to Andrew again, waiting for him to spit it out. A cold breeze rushes through my knitted sweater, and I hide my hands inside the sleeves.
“You have five minutes to throw all of your stuff in your bag,” he says, and my heart is beating erratically before he finishes the sentence. He taps his wrist where there is no watch. “Not a second more.”
“Andrew—”
“This isn’t up for debate,” he says. “Go get your stuff.”
I just look at him, face blank.
My theory was right, but I didn’t want it to be. I don’t want to go on the road…I mean, I do…but it’s not right. It’s just not right.
“You have four minutes now.”
“But we can’t just leave like this,” I argue. “It would be rude.” I point at Asher. “And Asher just got here. Don’t you want to visit with—”
“I can visit my big brother anytime,” Asher counters. “Right now, I think you better do what he says or you might end up on the road wearing the same panties for a week.”
A few more seconds pass and I still haven’t moved. I’m in a state of mild shock, I guess.
“Three minutes, babe,” Andrew says and is looking at me with a serious face. “I’m not kidding. Get up there, throw our shit in our bags, and get in the damn car.”
Oh hell, he’s back to his old self again…
When I start to argue again, Andrew’s eyes get all feral-looking, and he says, “Hurry up. Time’s running out!” and he points to the house.
Finally, letting down my guard and going with the moment as much as I can allow myself, I glare at him and say, “Fine.” I’m only agreeing to it because I know he’s trying make things better. But I feel guilty as hell.
Disregarding his playful five-minute demand, I turn on my heels and walk very slowly back toward the house, purposely taking my time, partly my way of silently arguing the situation.
I push open the bedroom door, set my bag on the bed, and start stuffing everything inside of it. Then I go into the bathroom and grab our toothbrushes and various bathroom necessities. I yank our phone chargers from the wall and then my phone from the nightstand and chuck it all into my purse. I make my way around the room, hoping that I’m not missing anything.
Looks like Andrew already packed his stuff at some point and I never noticed.
Then I just stand here, scanning every inch of the place around me but not really seeing any of it. I don’t want to do this, but maybe it’s the right thing.
I hear the horn honk three times, and it snaps me out of my thoughts. Grabbing my bag, I swing it over my shoulder and grab my purse from the bed.

Excerpt

I can’t help myself, taking in as much of him as I can, I start planting little kisses to my favorite spot on his neck. He smells wonderful, with a hint of cologne and the only smell I’ve ever loved underneath, his smell. When he swings me around, my lips instantly go to his and I kiss him with so much passion my lips instantly swell up. I take my time becoming reacquainted with his tongue, taste and rhythmic dance as we rediscover each other. We haven’t said a single word, only allowing our lips to express the feelings of happiness oozing from every part of us.

I hear the deep voice of a man clearing his throat and it causes me to crack my eyes open. Our lips are still planted together when Jake comes into my line of sight. Tucked under his arm, Delilah is standing with tears in her eyes. She’s dabbing fallen tears with her white handkerchief and looking happier than I’ve ever seen her.

Drake breaks our kiss and slowly slides me down his body, planting a small kiss to the tip of my nose. Before I can fully turn to Delilah, she snatches me into her arms, squeezing me so hard it’s making it hard to breathe. I hold her back and allow the joy of this moment to take me over. My own tears begin to prick my eyes and instead of choking them back, I let them free fall down my cheeks. I love these kinds of tears; tears that come from happy moments. I haven’t cried these kinds of tears in a really long time and it feels invigorating. ~Presley Quinn, Tragic Love

Excerpt:
“Okay, I’m done. Now hurry!” the makeup artist cried out. “You’re up in two minutes.
Don’t you dare mess up your makeup again!”
Maude ran out, keeping her hands away from her recently rouged cheeks, and Matt
hurried behind her.
She stood right behind the curtain and listened to the host’s cheerful voice, announcing
her.
“Now ladies and gentlemen, we have a new artist with us tonight. She’s spent her last
six months in New York working on her first album. Her first single has been released and is
a huge hit . . .”
“Maude,” Matt whispered, tugging her sleeve.
“Yes?” She looked back at him, smiling.
“I just wanted to tell you . . . to let you know that you can always count on me.”
“I know, Matt,” Maude smiled gratefully.
“Her voice will take your breath away, her music is amazing . . . ”
“No, I’m serious. Our friendship has had its ups and downs, but I don’t want it to be that
way anymore.”
Maude nodded.
“I don’t care if you’re with Thomas Bradfield. As long as you’re happy, I’m happy.”
Maude paused, puzzled. “What? Thomas Bradfield—”
“Give a round of applause for Maude Laurent!” the host cried.
“That’s your cue! Go!” Matt urged.
Maude reluctantly turned away from Matt and hurried on stage.
The blaring lights blinded her as she entered the stage and faced the cheering crowd.
She had to restrain her impulse to shield her eyes and continued steadily towards the dark
Steinway.
She had played on it earlier but then, she hadn’t felt nervous. Her hands hadn’t been
trembling, and her voice hadn’t been shaky.
Maude sat on the piano stool and looked towards the crowd.
They were all there.

EXCERPT

My feet start to move quickly as I travel down through old buildings toward the bar. In a few short minutes, I make my way to the parking lot where I need to stop to catch my breath. The heat is sucking all the air from my lungs along with my guilt for what I’ve done. When I pull open the door I can hear Darcie screaming at Drake at the same time that Reggie is restraining his arms, pinning them behind his back. His eyes meet mine and they break all over again. I have to save him. I can’t bring him down with all the ugliness growing inside of me.
I slowly walk through the bar and keep my eyes solely on his. Darcie is turning her anger to me, but I shut it down because only Drake matters in this moment. No one else. I reach into my pocket and pull the small white pill from its depths. Placing it in the palm of my hand, I show him exactly what it is and his bloodshot, drunken eyes meet mine, slowly. Reggie releases his hold on Drake, allowing him to lower his arms to his sides.
“What’s that?”he asks with a slurred tongue as he shrugs his shoulders, loosening them from the tension inflicted by Reggie.
“I didn’t do it. I was waiting for something good to stop me, and then…there you were. You are more important to me than my own life and I can’t hurt you by doing this,” I whisper as I pick up the pill and place it in his sweaty hand.
His eyes focus slowly on the pill. He turns it over with his fingers in his hand, the confusion apparent as he studies the small white tablet. He can’t even look at me and I don’t blame him. I’ve ruined any trust he’s had in me and I deserve it. I’ve only been hiding from reality for a long time. Drake tips his hand to the side, allowing the pill to drop to the floor. As it hits the ground, Drake lifts his booted foot then slams it onto the tile. He twists his heel, grinding the pill into a fine white powder.
He slowly lifts his head and looks over to Reggie. “So now you know,” he says then he pushes past me, brushing his arm against mine as he walks out on all of us. ~Presley Quinn, Tragic Love

Excerpt:

He laughs that loud laugh that cuts down into my stomach and vibrates my breakfast to the surface. “Of course. I haven’t seen you in quite some time and thought I’d pay my baby daughter a visit. Did you get my letter?”

I can’t help the tremble that takes root in my chin and bleeds up into my tear ducts. I fight the well of salt water. Seth was right. They were a weakness to him, and he’d feed on them. “You need to go.”

“I’ll go when I’m ready. I think you should remember whose roof you’re living under and be more gracious.”

The door across the hall opens, and I meet Seth James’ bold stare over my father’s shoulder. God no. Please, don’t watch this.

He leaves the door open and steps closer. “Everything okay?”

My father lurches back and clears his throat. “Everything’s fine.” He spins and thrust out his hand, all politician’s smiles and his kissing baby’s grin on his face. “E. Harrison, and you are?”

“Neighbor. Seth James.”

I grip my towel tighter, but Seth’s eyes never stray from Dad’s. He was so wrong about being a hero. He’d just saved me from pure evil. The two men stand taller. My father is forbidding in his expensive threads. He has years of cut muscles beneath that have kept him from sagging like most men his age. Seth, on the other hand, has youth on his side. He’s all hard ridges and full of territorial male dominance.

With a deep sigh that relaxes all those tightened nerves, I ask, “Father, did you need something?”

“I came by to speak to you about something, but, perhaps another time would be better suited.” He glances back at me and sneers, but returns to sleazy smiles before he gives a nod to Seth. “Mr. James, a pleasure. I’ll be on my way.”

Seth puts a hand out and catches my father’s shoulder. “Mr. Harrison, as the owner of this condo, I feel that I should warn you against making my tenants uncomfortable.” Seth steps across the hall and drops an arm around my scarred shoulder. His thumb soothes away the shiver chasing over my collar bone. “I’m not sure of your welcome here, so please correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t want to see either of these girls come to harm.”

I gasp. He spoke so eloquently. Bold and rich. I’d have never thought he had it in him if I hadn’t just witnessed it. And no one has ever come to my defense. Never. Seth James was ten feet tall and made of blue bubble gum right now. I’d chew him, blow him, and make him pop. Vulgar, I know, but there it is.

My father straightens his jacket. “Do you know who I am?”

“I do, but obviously you do not know who I am or what I’m capable of.” Seth tucks me even closer. If he’s noticed the scars stretching across my shoulders, he’s too polite to even give them a second glance, and for that, I’ll forever be indebted to him. “Don’t fuck with Alice again.”

He knows my name. And he just cussed my dad.

Harrison squints at us, and turns, clicking his heels together before stalking to the elevator. As much as I love seeing someone put him in his place, Seth James had just built me a coffin.

Fucking great. As soon as the sliding doors close on Dad, I shove Seth away from me. He’s too much right now. Everything is too much.

His brow wrinkles. “What?”

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?”

He steps back and glances at the floor before smirking up at me. “Being your hero.”
