Designing Love Book #1

Trish DeVign knows what she needs to be single, successful and satisfied. She needs a baby. With recent relationships falling short of her expectations, she’s single by choice. With a thriving interior design company, she’s got successful covered. It’s the satisfied part that eludes her, and that’s her mother’s fault—not her adopted mother, but the mother who gave her away, sentencing her to a privileged life with two good people who don’t share with her a single drop of DNA.

Tony Corcarelli has spent his adult life as the black sheep of his large Italian-American family ever since he turned his back on running the family carpentry business so he could live a more laidback life, forcing his sister to take the reins. Now, Tony’s grandmother has cancer, and he’s expected to join the family in making her wishes come true. Unfortunately, the two things Nonna wants most for Tony are two things he can’t fathom: a wife and kids or the priesthood. There has to be another way.

When Trish asks her best friend’s brother, Tony, to escort her to a wedding, a night of fun and flirtation turns serious, with Trish confessing she wants a baby. Could a calculated conception be the answer they’ve both been looking for?

My Review:

4.7 Star Review – Baby by Design (Designing Love Book #1)

I recommend this book.

I enjoyed this book by Elley. This book includes passion, laughs, heartache, and a sweet love story.

Trish DeVign wants a baby.  She is dating to try to get a man that is husband material so she can get married and have a baby.  But her dates all turn out to be bad choices.

Tony Corcarelli is considered the family bad boy.  His family thinks he is a screw up.  But Trish thinks he is HOT.

Can the bad boy give her what she wants?  Will he be okay with what she needs from him.

Trish is a planner and a thinker.  She spends her time making plans and overthinking everything.

Tony is a bad boy.  He spends his time on a motorcycle running from the family problems.  Can he stay in one place long enough to help out Trish?

Very good read.  Love all the surrounding characters.  Can’t wait to see who shows up in the next book.

Funny part:

He thought about it as he parked his bike and jogged the steps to his flat. Ultimately, he wasn’t worried he’d end up married in Vegas, because after seeing the pain of his mother becoming a widow and Vin’s ugly divorce, marriage lost its luster—not that it had much before. If you could get the goods without the gold, then why bother. And if you could get the kid, too? Bing-to-the-O.

Tony turned back to the chairs and Trish, who had removed the plastic covering and settled onto the cushion, crossing her long legs and bouncing one barefoot with red painted toes in his direction. As she sat, she rubbed her palms over the arms of the chair and breathed deeply enough that he risked hypnosis by the rise and fall of her breasts. Not the sort of thing he wanted to notice about a woman he couldn’t pursue.

“You really do great work.”

He smiled and stepped closer, because he was a gentleman who’d just been complimented. “Thank you.” He squatted and ran his hand along the nailhead trim, grazing her covered calf muscle, because he was a guy who liked the way her face flushed whenever he stood too close. “I’m glad you like it. When you’re in need of my skills again, you know where to find me.” And then he stood, taking two steps back toward the hall, because even a screw-up like him knew where to draw the line.

She sat ramrod straight, gripping the arms of the chair. “Tony, I need a favor.”

He stopped. “What’s up?”

“I need a…guest for my cousin’s wedding on Saturday. Would you happen to be interested?”

“I take it the good doctor wasn’t so good.”

A nervous chuckle escaped her lips. “Not good at all. And I RSVP’d for two with the hope that he’d still be around, and now my mother is driving me crazy, saying I can’t embarrass myself and her by cancelling this late in the game. I’m stuck.”

It was Tony’s turn to chuckle. “So you want me to unstick you?”

She shrugged, managing cute, coy, and sexy with one pouty-mouthed look. “Would you?”

If he was sane and sensible, no, he wouldn’t. “Absolutely. What time should I pick you up?”

“Thank you,” she breathed on a noisy exhale. “We should leave at three, but I’ll drive.”

“You don’t trust my driving?”

“It’s a wedding, Tony, and I’m wearing a dress. You should wear a suit, like the one you wore to Nonna’s party.” He liked the way she pulled her bottom lip between her teeth when she paused for a breath. “Dress clothes can’t be worn on the back of a motorcycle.”

An image of her creamy leg stretching out from beneath a short skirt and hanging alongside the chrome of his bike made his skin itch. He grinned to cover the not-so-innocent thought. “No bike. Got it. I’ll pick you up at three.” And before she could protest, he turned around and walked away.

He’d never been the kind of guy to let a woman down, and that was a blessing and curse. Now he needed a car worthy of escorting Trish DeVign to a family wedding, in addition to a grand gesture for Nonna’s wish list.

Talk about pressure.

About the Author
I’m a visual effects artist for film and television by day, and at night I don my author cape and pen stories for the YA crowd. I love a good fairy tale, especially if there’s a creepy twist, so that’s what I write.

I met my husband in the World of Warcraft and we live in Los Angeles with our cat. We spend our time playing video games, reading, hiking, sweeping up cat hair, and cursing the terrible traffic.

I have a bachelor’s degree in Religion and Philosophy from Hillsdale College, and some of my past jobs have included: swimming lessons teacher, lifeguard, furniture salesperson, barista, and loan officer. I was especially terrible at the loan officer bit and that’s what prompted me to make a major change and go off to Canada to get a diploma in 3D Animation and Visual Effects. After that, I moved to Los Angeles by myself and roomed with two crazy sisters I found on Craigslist. But that’s another tale.

When I was a little girl, about five or six years old, Mr. Coxworth gave me several pop-up children’s books. He propped them up on the kitchen counter in his house, and I would play in the paper castles and oceans. I’d never heard the stories my “forts” belonged to, so I made up my own instead.

Cinderella’s castle became the home of my “real parents,” who would come and rescue me someday and break the curse keeping me so tiny. We would ride away in a gilded carriage, and I would never have to return to Lilliput ever again.

Hansel and Gretel became my brother and sister. Together we would bury the evil witch in candy and then live in her gingerbread house forever. In my reimagining, Hansel was my protective older brother and Gretel much younger, the baby of the family. And I was smack in the middle. Normal. And I didn’t have to go to school or have tutors or learn old, dead languages.

The Snow Queen looked so very much like Dr. Christiansen in the illustrations that I imagined they were one and the same. Hansel and Gretel would come and spring me from her icy castle, and we would escape to our gingerbread house on the next page.

As I grew out of the pop-up books, I began to write my own stories in a little notebook. I called them my “True Tales,” and they were my dreams for what my life would have been if I’d been born under different circumstances. Tales of my first day at school, getting a poor grade in English, first crush, first kiss…

When I met Jack, I stopped writing them.

Today I write a new one. Not on paper. Not for anyone to find. I write it on my soul.

The heat of the morning sun and the man lying next to me draw me from slumber. Light wraps around his bare arm, setting the tiny hairs aglow, then comes to rest on the sheet as a perfect triangle of white.

The man is Jack, but he’s a few years older now, as am I. We have both grown into our faces and wear them with confidence. We know the landscape of the other’s body better than our own.

Still, I hesitate to touch him. The featherweight blanket of quiet has settled upon us. I watch him sleeping, but staring and even touching is an intrusion into his space, a violation of his trust. And his trust is my most priceless treasure. I have fought to keep it with sweat and tears.

Somehow, now, we are nearly the same size. I’m not sure how it happened. I don’t know how he forgave me for lying to him or what he said when he discovered the truth. I don’t know why he loves me, why he stays.

But he does. And I do. I always will.

I seal up my story within myself. I seal up my body, heart, and soul so they will remain safe. I seal myself inside of my bedcovers to block it all out.

About Sibylla Matilde
!Sibylla Matilde
Sibylla Matilde grew up in the mountain valleys of Southwest Montana, and grew up exploring the alfalfa fields on the back of a horse. She attended a two-room schoolhouse 1st through 6th grade where she had same teacher the whole time. Beginning at about age 12, Sibylla discovered historical romance, feeding off of work of Jude Devereaux, Lisa Kleypas, and Karen Robards. She loves a book that can make the reader run the gamut of emotions, from the sweet glow of new love to gut-wrenching heartache. She always has stories floating around in her head, living in some fantasyland until she writes them down to free them. She is a true romantic, a bit of a Pollyanna, and a deeply emotional soul.
Music is her emotional trigger. Growing up with a Wagnarian-opera-loving mother, Sibylla grew up with music that digs deep into her soul and pulls out emotion. The soundtrack to her life includes different genres and generations. She looooooooves Thirty Seconds to Mars (rather obsessively, actually) with a little Kings of Leon to mix things up, and pimps them out regularly to all her friends through Spotify. She also enjoys watching Met Opera HD broadcasts at her local movie theater, and hopes (listening Met?) to someday see Diana Damrau reprise her role as Mozart’s Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte – The Magic Flute.
Sibylla lives with her husband, Mike, a man who she firmly believes saved her from her self-destructive, hot mess self. He makes her laugh every day, even when things seem to be falling apart around them, and has proved to her that love really can heal a shattered soul. In 18 years, they have never had a fight, but argue regularly with their two teenage kids who have, unfortunately, inherited their father’s quick wit (unfortunate as it is a quick wit that Sibylla, herself, definitely does not possess – there is a reason she is a writer and not a stand-up comedian), and live a quiet life with their two weird little rescued Chiweenies. Wait… teenagers and little yap-dogs? Okay, maybe not so quiet. 🙂

 From Chapter 4

Thank God!  His truck was there.

Reenergized, she hopped up his front steps and knocked. Nothing. Feeling a little disgruntled, she knocked again. And nothing. Once more, one last time, she knocked. Okay, she pounded. Beat the ever-loving hell out of the door.

“Just a sec,” she heard Ronin call faintly.

Yay!  The door swung open and… Ooooohhhhh!

Standing a step or two down from Ronin, her eyes first hit the small white towel wrapped around his waist. The faint scent of masculine soap enveloped her senses as her eyes traveled down to his bare feet, and back up. Yep, that’s really only just a little white towel. With an embarrassingly audible gulping sound, her vision slowly traveled up to his bare chest. It was mouthwatering… broad with a light dusting of hair over his pectorals. Firm and solid, lightly tanned muscles of a physical, hard-working man. A little higher and she saw the reason for his undressed state. Shaving cream spread across the lower half of his face. Somehow, the shaving cream made his hazel eyes appear to glow, and her fingers tingled with the desire to smooth the white foamy layer along his strong jaw.

“Um, sweetheart?  Did you need something?” Ronin asked, a slight grin appearing beneath the soapy layer.

“I… um… car ticking… and… not starting…” she stuttered, unable to form a single coherent thought.

Ronin wasn’t helping, either, just standing there with a half-smile and waiting for her to spit out something… anything. Finally, she just had to forcefully rip her eyes away. Focus on the truck. You need liquor, and he can go get it in his truck.

“Could I, um… Amy, Joanie, and I need some booze. Would, um, would you be willing to run to the liquor store for me?”  She could barely look at the guy, and her voice practically squeaked when she talked. What the hell was wrong with her?

Ronin seemed to enjoy her discomfort, his eyes narrowing a bit. He folded his arms across his chest and leaned up against the doorframe totally relaxed with his near nudity. As he crossed one foot in front of the other, the motion pulled slightly at the bottom of the towel to reveal an upside-down V of skin which drew her eyes back to the scant covering. Devin realized her jaw was hanging open, and she snapped it closed, glancing up to see his smile had broadened. Damn.

[Book Blitz] Water and Fire by Demelza Carlton

Water & Fire Book Blitz Banner

Water and Fire Cover 15-9-2013

A steamy contemporary medical romance involving a sexy doctor, a naughty nurse, a midwife on a mission and a mysterious predator in Albany, Western Australia. Working as a student midwife in an Australian country hospital is never easy, but Belinda finds more trouble than most. There’s the intern doctor who follows her around like an overgrown puppy, the dangerous local wildlife and her own secrets she must keep. When she finds herself without a place to live, what else can possibly go wrong? Or is it time for something to go right?

He caught me staring. “Have you never seen a man with hair on his chest before?” he asked testily. I didn’t know what to say. “Not the colour of fire, no,” I said finally. He relented. “Back home in Ireland, it’s supposed to be good luck to rub a man’s red hair, like a leprechaun.” He saw my confusion. “A sort of mythical creature.” He took a step closer to me, still shirtless. “Go on.” I was reluctant to touch the man at all, let alone his strange chest hair, but the hope of better luck for the future got the better of me. Besides, I felt I might offend him if I spurned his offer. I stretched a hand out, lightly stroking the wiry orange hair trailing down his stomach. He pulled away, doubling over. I drew my hand back. “That tickles,” he apologised. His expression turned to a broad smile. “Now, your turn.” It took me a moment to understand what he meant. “But I don’t have any chest hair and it wouldn’t be red, even if I did.” His smile turned cheeky as he continued. “No chest hair? You expect me to believe that? You must have some insulation, not to have frozen solid in the wind out on the boat today.” I shook my head. “None. Even if I did, it would be too fair to bring you any luck.” I looked away and refilled our whiskey glasses so I didn’t have to look at him. I gulped the contents of mine down as quickly as I could. “Go on.” His eyes held a challenge. He turned his back to me and picked up the poker, shifting the logs in the fire to burn better. The man was a doctor. How many chests had he seen in the course of his profession? What was one more? I shrugged and pulled my t-shirt off. My frozen fingers had been too cold to fasten a bra earlier in the day, so my chest was now as bare as his. “Holy Mary, Mother of God!” His eyes were as round as two puffed-up blowfish. The poker clattered to the hearth.

Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish. She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below. Sensationalist spin? Hardly. She takes a camera with her to photograph such things to share later. She asserts that sharks are camera shy. Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world. The Ocean’s Gift series was her first foray into fiction, followed by her Nightmares trilogy.
