Strings of Glass           by Emily Kimelman

A Sydney Rye Novel, #4

 Blurb:

STRINGS OF GLASS is the fourth novel in Emily Kimelman’s Sydney Rye Series of dark murder mystery novels. This series features a strong female protagonist and her rescue dog, Blue. It is recommended for the 18+ who enjoy some violence, don’t mind dirty language, and are up for a dash of sex. Not to mention an awesome, rollicking good mystery!

Sydney Rye is hanging out in India with her boyfriend, Dan, reading paperbacks and sipping beer. No violence and no reminders of her past. But when she and Blue, are attacked by a pact of wild dogs, Sydney starts to feel that old itch again; to do good by being bad.

Trouble finds Rye when she stops the attempted rape and murder of Anita, a reporter working on a story of corruption and human trafficking. The atrocities Anita describes send Sydney, Blue and Dan on a quest that takes them across India after a dangerous and, up until now, untouchable, figure. While Sydney struggles to accept her true nature she realizes that it is the only way to end decades of abuse and exploitation. But Rye fears that she will lose herself, becoming no better than the monster she fights against.

I took off down a dirt ridge that ran along a culvert which brought water out of the town. The stench of sewer was ripe as we roared through the open space. When we reached the river the woman said, “That way, towards the highway.” I turned the bike at the top of the hill, my bare leg glowing in their headlights. On my thigh the thick ridge of a scar from the last time I got shot stood out puckered and pink.

Two scooters left, one with two guys on it. I wanted to send them into the sewage that sulked by but there was no way… unless I got off the bike and faced these ignorant fucks right there. I revved the engine watching their approach.

“What are you doing? We need to go!” the woman on the back of my bike said, squeezing me around the belly.

“Do they have guns?” I asked.

“Yes!” she squealed. “Come on.” She pushed on me. “What are you doing?”

I revved the engine and this time let it catch sending us shooting along the dirt road past the neatly lined crops. I sped up headed for the tree line, my engine roaring. We hit a bump and got some air; I felt the breath rock in my lungs, my heart jump in my throat.

Broken Fences by Kelly Gendron

A TroubleMaker Novel ~ Book 1

Blurb:

Colden Saint James, Dusty Owens, and a single night of passion had equaled to poor old Mr. McAllister’s broken fence. Add six years, a troublemaking photo, and there’s not a fence in Texas that’s gonna be safe.

It took Dusty Owens two years to land Colden “Saint” James, even if it was for only one night, but the very next day, he was gone. Now, years later, the “Saint” has returned, but he’s no longer the do-gooder rookie cop Dusty remembers.

Dusty Owens always had a way of making every single one of Colden’s man parts go all hard. He’d been so close to falling for the girl before he’d left Odessa. Now, due to a troublemaking photo, Colden must return to his hometown to keep her safe. Trouble is, he’s a different man—not to mention the change. “Just admit it. You want me.” A crooked grin tugged on his lip.

Dusty glared at him from the corner of her eye. “Okay.” She gripped the railing and swayed back. “Yes, once I wanted you—once. But like I said, let’s not dwell on the past. I’m so over you, St. James.”

The smug son-of-a-bitch’s smile broadened. He shook his head. “I’m so not convinced, Dusty girl,” he said with sparkling, playful eyes.

“Stop calling me that!”

“What?” He arched a badly behaving eyebrow. “Girl?”

“Yes!”

“Well, you are one, aren’t you?”

“Yes, but—”

“Oh, I get it,” he rudely interrupted. “Too generic? How ‘bout I call you, uh…my pretty girl? Would you like that?”

In false protest, her nose and forehead scrunched. But she could already see it. The minute that little fawning left his sexy mouth, she’d drop to her knees, ready to give the man whatever he wanted.

“No?” He rubbed his chin and released a low, sexy, “Hmm.” A second later, he lifted an a-ha finger. “Tough girl?”

Her entire face flushed with heated anger.

He grimaced. “Don’t like that either?” His eyes hooded. “I know what kind of girl you are.”

She snorted. This oughtta be good. “Yeah? And what kind of girl am I?”

“A bad girl,” he huskily drawled. “You want to be my bad girl, don’t you?”

“No!” Oh God, yes! Who wouldn’t want to be his bad… anything? The new and improved St. James was hot, and her knees were already begging to hit the floor for him. Shake it off, bad girl. Just, shake it the hell off!

“Come over here.” An arm wrapped around her waist. “C’mon.” He dragged out the words as he dragged her up to his side. “It’s all good. You can be my bad girl anytime, Dusty Owens.”

When he bent his head down, warning bells went off in her addled brain. Sissy and Jimmy could see them from where they were standing. She veered back, her hand pressing into his shoulder, “Colden!”

“Don’t be so skittish.” His lips turned up, and his grip tightened. “Where’s that brazen girl? Where’s the girl who showed up at Rusty’s Tavern with Britt Weber, the player of all plays?”

Her eyes widened. Is he really going to bring up that night?

“And after a slow, naughty bull ride performance in a very slinky white dress, I might add, that bad girl dirty danced with the scumbag.”

He even remembers my dress? God.

“Where’s that brazen girl who took a huge risk, hoping I’d come to her rescue and save her from the sleazebag?”

The night flooded into her brain, Colden pulling her out of Britt Weber’s truck. Him punching Britt, who was twelve years her senior, right in the face, and Colden chasing after her and catching up with her at old man McAllister’s fence. Crazy for him, her attempt at making Colden jealous had worked. She’d tried to keep him hot by picking a fight, but Colden hadn’t taken the bait. Without saying a word, he’d just walked up to her and kissed her hard, a kiss he didn’t break until they broke McAllister’s fence—until she’d surrendered her virtue and her heart to him.

“So? Where’s that bad girl now?” he provoked.

Dusty shook her head and told him the truth. “She grew up.” She knew it was immature to try to make Colden jealous back then. He wasn’t a kid. He was a man, and he had shown her that night just what kind of man he was, the kind she wanted to spend the rest of her life with.

“Nah.” Sturdy fingers pressed into her hipbone. “I think she’s still in there. She just needs some coaxing to come out and play.” He leaned in and huskily taunted, “Come out, come out, wherever you are! Be my bad girl and admit you wanna play.”

“In your dreams, St. James. Why don’t you get over yourself? I’ve already told you that I don’t feel anything for you—not anymore,” she lied, trying to save herself.

“I don’t believe you.” His eyes wickedly twinkled with the statement.

“I don’t really care what you believe.”

“Take your panties off.”

As angry as he was making her, her body had to respond to the command, and every muscle froze. “What?”

“If they’re bone dry,” he said, tilting to the left and dropping his voice, “I’ll believe you.”

“Colden, look where we are, for God’s sake. You’re crazy if you think I’m gonna¬—”

He tilted slightly closer, his eyes dark and daring. “Take them off.”

“I-I can’t,” she mumbled, hypnotized by his captivating, intent look and even more stunned by the crazy demand.

“Why?” The corner of his mouth lifted. “Oh, right.” His smile grew bigger. “Don’t worry. I don’t mind getting my hand a little wet.”

What? Absolutely incorrigible! “You’re an ass.”

“Well, if that’s not your excuse, what is?”

“Besides the obvious, it’s a rude a request.” She smirked at him. Yeah, that’s right, buddy. Two can play at this game. “I can’t give them to you because…” She inched closer to his tempting mouth. “I’m not wearing any.” Unable to ignore the pleasure she got from seeing the astonishment light up his eyes, her smile grew too.

“Damn, girl.” He exhaled, letting out a very noticeable whistle. His hand slid slowly down her hip, as if to confirm her claim, then roamed to her backside. “Do you know what a statement like that can do to a guy?”

“Again, I don’t care.”

“Well then, let’s make you care…”

Excerpt:

My eyes tracked upward to rest on his sun-bronzed and lightly bearded face. Harsh and angular in the lamplight, it was at once the handsomest and cruelest face I had ever seen. He regarded me fiercely with scornful eyes. Those eyes! I had seen them before.

I gasped. It was him! The man from the party who had eyed me with such insolence. Even now he gazed at me as no other man had ever dared to—in a way that made me feel like a slave exposed for sale in a public market.

“Who are you?” I asked hoarsely, speaking in French without thinking.

He replied in French as well. “I am the Sheik Ahmed Ben Hassan.”

The name conveyed nothing. “Is it money that you want? Are you holding me for ransom?”

He regarded me for a long and silent moment with an expression of contempt. “I have no need of your money.”

“What then?” I demanded, but deep down I already knew it was not a question of ransom. The way he looked at me was far too revealing and made my stomach churn. “Do you think that you can keep me here, you fool?” I lashed out in growing panic. “Do you suppose I can vanish into the desert and that no notice will be taken of my disappearance? That no inquiries will be made?”

“There will be no inquiries,” he answered me calmly.

“There will be inquiries.” I choked out. “I am not such a nonentity that nothing will be done when I am missed. The English authorities will make the French Government find out who is responsible, and you will pay for what you have done.”

“Pay?” His amused look sent a cold feeling of dread through me. “I have already paid… in gold that matches your hair, my gazelle. Besides,” he continued, “the French Government has no jurisdiction over me. There is no authority above my own.”

My trepidation was growing more terrible every passing moment. “Why have you brought me here?”

“Why have I brought you here?” He repeated with a slow and heated appraisal that made me acutely, almost painfully, conscious of my sex. “Bon Dieu! Are you not woman enough to know?”

BARNES AND NOBLE

My Review:

4.5 Star Review – Lady Broke

I recommend this book.

I enjoyed this book by Rachel.  This book includes passion, laughs, heartache, a kidnapping, a gun fight, and robbery.

Christie Wallace is staying with her uncle and helping him run his business after her Aunt died.  She is glad to be away from her father as he is trying to arrange a wedding for her to a man she has never met.

After the post office in town is robbed by the Everett gang (three brothers) one of them runs into her Uncles shop to hide.  She becomes a witness to the crime as she saw the robbers face while he was hiding out.

Nat Randall is a bounty hunter who is trying to bring in the Everett gang.  He has his own personal reasons for wanting the gang to hang for their crimes.

Nat catches one of the brothers, Hank and brings him to town for Christie to identify but it is not the one who hid out after the robbery.  Nat and his friend take the brother in the dark of night to lure the other brothers out of hiding to catch them all.

The two brothers Billy and Cecil kidnap Christie and follow Nat’s trail to try and get the other brother back.  As the ride through the woods on horses for days Christie tries to figure out a way to escape the brothers.  She has to be careful how she tries to escape as the brothers killed the last witness so they would not have an issue killing her.

When Everett gang catch up to Nat they want to trade Christie for Hank.  During the trade Hank runs into Bill’s line of fire and gets hit in the gut.  He later dies from his wounds.  Now the Everett’s want revenge against Nat as if he didn’t catch hank to begin with Hank would still be alive.  They also want Christie back as she is pretty.

Will Nat catch the last two Everett brothers?  If so will they hang this time?  Will Christie’s father still force her to marry a man she does not know?  Will Nat hold it against Christie that he had to save her and he lost another chance at getting the brothers?

The clang of bells sounded against the front door.

Christie’s belly gave a sickening lurch.

The robber ducked down behind the counter at her feet. In his haste, the red bandanna slipped down to his chin.

For a split second their gazes locked.

His green eyes narrowed in a murderous glare.

She hastily looked away.

The click of his gun cocking made her swallow hard.

He settled himself like a laying hen, on a half empty crate of canned peaches at her feet.

“Afternoon, ma’am.”

Christie swallowed hard.

The tall stranger striding toward her in the brown duster appeared far more dangerous than the robber under the counter. His blue eyes snapped as cold as spring water against his bronze skin. It was difficult to determine his features through the stubble on cheeks.

But there was purpose behind his steady advancing swagger, urging her to take a stepback.

The gun against her thigh held her still.

She managed a small frozen smile—a smile one might give when a rattler lay

curled inches from your feet. Her heart raced so fast, she could barely breathe.

The stranger cracked a lazy smile. His voice held a raspy edge. “I’m looking for a

no-account robber, by the name of Everett. You haven’t seen him, have you?”

“He’s gone.” Christie attempted to swallow past the fear in her throat. “Out the

back door.”

His cool gaze slid to the wide-eyed, silent McDermotts, then back to her.

Her mouth went dry.

He didn’t believe her.

He knew.

Somehow he knew.
